Fear, intimidation and violence are the stock-standard weapons in the far-right arsenal.

For a number of years, anti-racist advocates in the United Kingdom have been subject to a vicious campaign of intimidation and harassment at the hands of a collaborative web project entitled Redwatch.

Redwatch takes its name from the standard thick-headed far-right presumption that anyone with the nerve to oppose their racist agenda must be a Communist or at the very least, a Liberal Democrats voter.

Redwatch breaches privacy laws by posting photographs, names and addresses of anti-racist activists and encourages its readers to pay the said activists “a visit.”

It works off the slogan, “Remember places, traitors’ faces, they’ll all pay for their crimes.”

As a result of having their details posted on these pages, a number of British anti-racists have been physically attacked and suffered damage to their property and countless thousands have found themselves on the end of numerous phone, verbal and written threats.

People like this collection of mums and dads from Lancashire.

Simon Sheppard, the owner of Redwatch was raided by the police last month and it now finally looks like this site will be shut down, irrespective of its hosting status on an American server.

Despite the obvious legal headaches of embarking on a campaign like this, there are still a number of far-right activists in our part of the world who are very much drawn to the idea of posting up the photos and personal details of anti-racist advocates.

Enter Western Australia’s Ben Weerheym and Redwatch Downunder.

White Devils: Weerheym is on the right. The anarchist flag was stolen from a pro-multicultural picnic.

Weerheym (aka Thor Hammered; Aussie Patriot) is a notorious neo-Nazi activist with a conviction for racist attacks on people’s homes. A former member of the Australian Nationalists Movement and the White Devils Social Club, Ben now occupies himself with regular prison visits to his mentor, Jack van Tongeren, and with the business of setting up Redwatch Downunder.

Over the last two months, Ben has sent out the following emails to prospective contributors.

On top of this, it would be greatly appreciated and greatly beneficial for you to keep your eyes open for flyers, rallys, functions etc held by communists, “anti-facists”, anarchists, homosexuals, multiculturalists etc. If you have a camera, take photos of people you may think would be of interest. Try to glean information about the people, ask questions, get involved even!
Relay whatever you find back to this email address, once the Redwatch Downunder site is launched then an new email addressed will be launched dedicated especially to Redwatch.

Now, most of us involved in Fight dem back! understand that threats, harassment and possibly even physical assaults are a possibility when you decide to campaign against race-hate groups. Keep in mind that just because it is “expected” doesn’t make it any less abhorrent.

None of us would ever have thought that our “proud, upstanding and patriotic” enemies would ever stoop so low as to harm to our families.

More fool us.

In the course of our investigations, FDB has naturally found itself in the possession of the personal details of countless race-hate activists.

In the days before FDB, the racist right felt rather comfortable in talking about themselves online and it hardly takes an MI6 spymaster to Google it all up.

We have already made the public declaration that we will not sink to the level of the racists by posting people’s personal details online.

Should Ben Weerheym push on with Redwatch Downunder, here is what the Western Australian criminal code will have to say about it.

Section 338:

In this chapter a reference to a threat is a reference to a statement or behaviour that expressly constitutes, or may reasonably be regarded as constituting, a threat to —

(a) kill, injure, endanger or harm any person, whether a particular person or not;

(b) destroy, damage, endanger or harm any property, whether particular property or not;

(c) take or exercise control of a building, structure or conveyance by force or violence; or

(d) cause a detriment of any kind to any person, whether a particular person or not.

And the penalty?

Section 338B:

Any person who makes a threat to unlawfully do anything mentioned in section 338(a), (b), (c) or (d) is guilty of a crime and is liable —

(a) where the threat is to kill a person, to imprisonment for 7 years;

(b) in any other case, to imprisonment for 3 years.

Summary conviction penalty in a case to which paragraph (b) applies: Imprisonment for 18 months or a fine of $6 000.

Going by the long litany of threats and criminal activity that arose out of Redwatch UK and also taking Weerheym’s recent criminal past into calculations, it would seem downright foolish to presume that Redwatch Downunder is not being set up for the express purpose of inciting the physical harassment and intimidation of anti-racist campaigners.

Redwatch Downunder has one purpose and one purpose only; to threaten, frighten and intimidate people into giving up the Fight dem back! campaign; to encourage and incite far-right activists to commit acts of violence against anti-racists and their property.
